Hello and welcome! My name is Chip Helton and I am the therapist behind this blog and the private practice Helton Counseling & Wellness. I am hoping to start this blog as a way for readers to get to know me a little more and learn about the way I view the therapeutic workspace.
As some of you may have already read in the “about me” section of the website, I graduated from North Carolina Central University with my masters in Mental Health Counseling. I am currently a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate (LPC-A) as well as a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS). In a nutshell, these licenses mean I can work with people who are having mental health concerns as well as substance use concerns.
I am a huge advocate for self-care and during sessions with my clients we work to identify ways to implement more self-care. Self care for me includes golfing and playing basketball with friends. I also have the cutest puppy in the world and even though she is not trained to be a therapy dog I consider her one for my own overall mental health!
Going to see a therapist can help project your life into a positive direction. I have always said no matter what is going on in someone’s life, crazy or calm, good or bad, we can all benefit from seeing a counseling professional. I think anyone could benefit from having a safe place to just talk things out and work through emotions that may get neglected in the busyness of everyday life.
From a practice standpoint, I consider myself to be an eclectic therapist. This is just a fancy way of saying I pull from a lot of different therapeutic techniques to best serve the person sitting across from me. I know there is not one therapeutic model that works for every person. This is why I find inspiration from various techniques including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, and much more. More important than any of the therapeutic techniques I use is a strong trusting relationship between myself and the client. This is the foundation for creating a positive therapeutic outcome.
This is just a small snapshot of me and what to expect from working together. As more post come along you will be able to see more into my vision of therapy and why anyone can benefit from seeing a therapist. If you are thinking about reaching out to a therapist in Charlotte, NC I would encourage you to do so to the begin your journey working towards a life of positive mental health!
